300…

Under other circumstances, I’d trot out something pithy and do my best to make a big deal out of hitting my 300th post. In fairness, that’s not not just here at http://www.jeffreytharp.com, but also includes posts I had made over at Blogger. It doesn’t include the now archived posts from long ago Myspace blog. There were probably another 200 of those, but we’re sticking with the “serious” work I’ve down in the past couple of years for purposes of counting.

Actually, 300 doesn’t seem like that many until you really sit doen and think about what goes into writing even one of these short bits – It’s a minimum half hour and climbs north of an hour for one of the more epic rants, so lets say all told it’s taken something more than 150 hours. Still not impressed? Sit down at your trusty keyboard and write nonstop for six days and then tell me what 150 hours feels like. Sure, they’re not all award winners by any stretch, but it’s a pretty impressive record of what’s been going on and the things that have caught my attention over the last three or four years. It’s no Gutenberg Bible or anything, but I’m mighty proud of alot of what’s been said here. At some point we should get back into a grove where the content writes itself. We’ll reevaluate at post 600.

Thanks!

Keeping up…

I know I haven’t been doing much of a job at keeping up with this lately, but really the only trauma for the last week or so has been work related stupidity and I’ve been trying to stay away from pondering that during non-duty hours as much as possible. So, yeah, other than that, things are good. It’s a beautiful day, the dogs are being crazy good, I have a pot of chili simmering away in the kitchen, and I have very very little to complain about… At the moment. Of course all of that is subject to change at a moment’s notice.

Shift…

Over the last few days I posted a few test runs over on Blogger to see how I’d like it. I have to say I’ve been impressed by the way it handles. Very basic profile, very simple editing, just the thing I was looking for. To be honest, now that I find myself spending a little more time on Facebook (I can check it at work and Blackberry supports a pretty sweet Facebook app) Blogger just seems to do a little better job at filling the writing niche I’m looking for.

This isn’t “smell ya later forever” or anything, I hope you’ll check in at my new place from time to time. Don’t worry, when there’s a world class rant, I’ll let everyone know. No membership required or anything, so just point your browser of choice at: http://jdtharp.blogspot.com/ and you’ll have it. And no, before anyone asks, I’m not leaving MySpace or any damned thing like that. I’ll still be checking in and maybe even posting something over here from time to time. So, yeah, I’ll be around.

Landmark…

Some time early Saturday morning, my cheerful little blog passed over the 20,000 view mark. For those of you keeping track at home, that’s 459 individual posts or 67,257 words or 116 pages of single spaced, 10 point type. Believe me, it says more about your willingness to read some nonsensical drivel than it says about any actual ability on my part. Thanks for sticking with me!

Change of venue…

After some serious consideration I have decided that it was time to enlarge my horizons a bit and jump into a more serious mode of blogging. That’s not to say that my previous blog wasn’t serious, but rather as an adjunct of MySpace, blogging wasn’t what the system was built to do. I’m happily ensconced here at Blogger now, and hope that we will all find it a productive change of venue. I’ll get to strengthen my chops among the serious bloggers here and hopefully those who stumble onto my new home for ranting and raving will find a better product. Sometimes you just need to change your perspective and I’m hopeful that this will be a good one.

Contemplating a change…

So, for the last few weeks, I’ve contemplated moving the blog to a host that offers a few more utilities and options for posting my semi-regularly scheduled missives. To be frank, the only reason I keep the MySpace page updated these days is because of the blog. A dedicated blogging platform just seems easier to manage on a day-to-day basis than keeping a dying website around to just support a blog… Why not cut out the middle-man and focus on what I really enjoy doing… ranting about all that is stupid in the world. I wouldn’t be leaving MySpace, of course, but rather putting the page into kind of a suspended animation mode so I have a presence here, but not something that needs regular care and feeding. Hopefully I’ll make a final decision after I’ve had a chance to play around with some of the hosting sites and see if they’ll fill the bill. As always, your thoughts are welcome.

Blah…

For the first time in quite a while I just haven’t really felt like posting. I actually haven’t felt like writing at all, which is something I really do enjoy for the most part. I’m not suspending the blog or anything, but things are going as well as can be expected with a 6 month old puppy and work hasn’t driven me to the top of a bell tower and I’ve been avoiding large groups of people as much as possible… Maybe it’s just that I’ve been avoiding my usual muse. Whatever the reason, fewer things to bitch about basically = fewer interesting posts. It’s times like this I thank God I don’t actually have to write on command. I’d be out of articles in a month and a half.

Discovery…

So, I’ve discovered that without the pain in the ass that was my old job, I really have very little to complain about. Sure, that’s good for me, but it’s completely fouling up my ability to post a blog on a semi-regular basis. I guess some people write about their day to day interactions with people out in the world, but we all know how much I hate being out in the world and being forced to interact with the populace, so that’s not exactly fertile ground for me. You might ask what I’ve been up to now that I don’t spend hours seething about the blundering incompetence at work. I’ve rediscovered actually reading books, which is something I still don’t get to do enough of. I’ve managed to spend a little more quality time killing zombies, so that’s good. Even Winston benefits as I have more time to roll around on the floor with him. Of course all of that makes for perfectly bland blogging, so I’ve spared you the details.

At the instigation of one of my oldest and dearest friends, I’ve even taken my first tentative steps into the world of Facebook. Thanks a lot, Sandi… Another social networking addiction is just what I need. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem to be as labor intensive as MySpace, so hopefully it won’t be too distracting. It also currently has the benefit of not being blocked by our network administrators… yet. So, if you’re on Facebook, look me up.
