Snow…

It’s Memphis… in March. There is absolutely no reason there needs to be snow here and yet, it’s out there covering everything. Actually, if I were being more specific, it’s slowly turning everything into a sheet of ice. Folks here are good at doing things like making barbecue, but when it comes to having a clue what to do about a couple of inches of snow, they should leave that to the professionals in the northern tier. I always mocked Washingtonians for their raging incompetence in dealing with this stuff… Now that I’ve seen how the south reacts, I’ll never say another bad word about them. These people couldn’t plow their way out of a parking lot, let alone keep the major highways clear. I’ve got a laundry list of things I wanted to do today, but I just don’t think I have it in me to go out and deal with “Memphis on Ice.”

Things you learn from weather.com…

Sometimes I question myself for picking up and moving down here. Of course it would be nice to be closer to everyone and everything… and I’m still convinced that DC is the center of the universe… but then sometimes I surf by weather.com and realize that it’s 50 degrees warmer here than it is back there. At times like that being here seem like a much better idea.

The South is a different world, but it does have a few perks. Of course when it’s 110 in August, my calculus will probably be a little different.

You can never find a brass bra when you need one…

I use to think it a point of pride not to be bothered with trifling details like coats on cold days, but I’m ready to admit that I’ve lost any semblance of tolerance for the cold weather that growing up in Western Maryland bestowed on me. It’s colder than blue hell here in Chicago. It’s cold outside. It’s cold inside. It’s just cold. Next time someone wants to send you to a conference, make sure you ask them where it is before saying yes.

And three shall be the number of the counting…

We’ve got three tropical systems keeping us pretty busy at the moment. Lots of planning and what ifs and more phone calls than anyone should reasonably be expected to keep up with. I’ll still be around, but the blogging may be a little slower for the next few days while we try to find our asses with both hands and a flashlight. Standby.

Fizzle…

This hurricane season as been a bit of a letdown after the intensity of 2005. I suppose it’s difficult to top one of the most damaging storms in human history, but still, throw me a friggin bone here. Ernesto had the wind knocked out of him over Cuba today and should hit south Florida as a tropical storm or a minimal hurricane… Hardly worth crawling out of bed for something like that, really. There is a slim possibility that he could punch out of Florida around Cape Canaveral and head north to Charleston. Moving slow, he could reintensify and do some damage. I’m not holding my breath.

I wouldn’t exactly say I’m rooting for the hurricane, because that would just be wrong, but still, this season has been all blow and no go. So much for new furniture.
